GOLF OUTING 2013 REUNION WEEKEND !!!!
---No, it's not bad news! In fact, it's darned good news. So pay
attention, all you golf enthusiasts. I'm sure many of you have good memories of
the golf outing, orchestrated by 1959's GARY E. BARNES, which was held for
several years running. Well, he's decided to see if there's still any interest
out there for it. If so, he's resurrecting it for this year. It would fall on
Friday, October 12. If you want to do this, contact Gary at
937 859-4559. Please do not respond to me, for the golf

advise me, as they've most been deleted from the readers list, at this

The only I got during this bulletin period was 1961's JUDITH L.
SAMUELS,
and we e-mail every day, sometimes twice or more, so I didn't have to
wait
on that one, nor get rejects.
You all know how much I hate losing even one of us! Amond are 1953's B.
DEAN
ELLIS (who's now gone from the readers list after 8 rejects. Does
anyone
know if he's still alive?), 1956's MARGIE L. HENDRICKS (this one troubled
me
a bit, as Margie signed on, only about a year ago, and wrote of
Many health woes, when we communicated. Any ideas, RALPH D. WILSON?),
1961's
J. MICHAEL HARRIS (also now off the readers list, after 8 rejects), and
yes,
still 1960's EULA FAYE BAILEY, and I'll take care of this one, myself.
Also
updating me on addresses which are and aren't used was 1958's BRUCE

CHENOWETH. So I'm all updated on that one, at least. (Footnote: To my
great
sadness, I learned since writing this of the July 3 death of MARGIE
L.
HENDRICKS. She lived in Titusville, Florida. I notified all her 1956
classmates, separately.)
Okay, I'm going to backtrack to June (I think) for a moment. I see I
failed
to mention the fact of 1956's ROSETTA PRUETT having returned to the WC
area.
After many years in Arizona. She and I have been in contact over the
past
year or so. Rosetta was friends with my sister, also 1956, the late
JUDY
ANN RISNER. How about an update, Rosetta? How's it going and what's it
like
to be back in the old hometown, after so many years out west? I remember
you
told me you'd bought a house. How is it all working for you, so far?
What a slew of good wishes, following my mini-stroke! You're all so
amazing
and I had such a rush of good feelings and felt so upbeat about it. You
have
no idea how uplifting and encouraging that was for me, at a time when I
sure
needed that verbal push. It is for that very reason I'm amazed by
people
who may have an illness, yet tell the family, "Now, don't tell
anyone!!"
Who on earth would NOT want all that support and good wishes?

not,
there were people who actually offered to come here and get me for
alumni
weekend, and then return me home, afterward, in the event I couldn't do
it.
Those included 1958's BILL R. HOWARD, 1960's JO ANN K. STEMLEY and GERALD
A.
FULLER, and 1961's EDNA L. GRAY. I'm simply blown away by such an
offer!
Now, why am I listing all these names? Couldn't I have just said a
blanket
thank-you to all of you, and let it go, at that? Why did I do all
this
extra typing? Yes, I'm going to tell you. But you all already knew
that,
didn't you? After lo, these many years, of all of us being disconnected
and
getting to that stage of life where some of our thoughts begin with,
"I
wonder whatever happened to -----?" it occurred to me (once this
little
effort, which began as a simple e-mail to 4 people, all 1961, took off
like
some sort of jet rocket after I started it in October of 2000), it
presented
the perfect platform to reconnect former WC classmates and bring them up
to
date on each others' lives. Now, I ask you all, is there anything more
fun
than seeing that person who was your best pal in first grade, your
first
crush in third grade, the school bully (did we have any of those?) with
whom
you can now be buddies, the maid of honor at your wedding, and the list
goes
forever? So if you should spot that person's name in any of these lists
and
contact me for the e-mail address---voila! A wonderful new chapter
begins
and the two of you are back in contact. It's positively one of the
most
rewarding and fulfilling aspects of doing this bulletin! So yes, I
will
continue, most of the time, to print each and every name who contacts
me.
Now, we move to the crisis with our own Mr. Chips (a fitting
nickname,
applied to him by none other than 1961's P. LYNNETTE GARRET), MURL E.
HUFFMAN. As we're all now aware, he had a major surgical, heart
procedure
July 29 at Kettering Medical Center. Believe me when I tell you, that
hospital was inundated with calls, cards, visitors, and flowers. In one
of
my unsuccessful calls to get his health status, a nurse said to me, "Who
is
this man, anyway?" It so reminded me of the ending of an old episode
of,
The Lone Ranger," wherein someone always said, "Who is that masked
man?" as
he majestically gallops away astride Silver, with Tonto and Scout
right
beside him. (During the radio days, we had to imagine that part, of
course.)
But I digress!
Anyway, I laughed when she asked the question and then replied as briefly
as
possible---brevity is not my strong suit, as you all know---telling
her
about his years in WC, his civics classes, his dedicated WC followers,
and
how he has always come to every function held by every class, as well as
to
the alumni weekend functions. She was amazed, of course. Anyway,
here's

But it's fair to say the hospital staff were overwhelmed!
Before I go to my other e-mails, I must tell you an amusing story which
was
shared with me by 1959's SHIRLEY R. PARKS. She and I both still refer
to
MEH, and address him as, "Mr. Huffman." Every time I do this, he
gently
admonishes me by saying, "My friends call me Murl," and smiles. But I'm
here
to tell you all, I just canNOT get, "Murl," to come out of my mouth, when
I
speak to him or of him. So Shirley wrote me an e-mail, stating the
exact,
same thing. She cannot use the first name, either, she wrote, no matter
how
hard she tries. I try, by beginning with that M sound. But every
time,
without fail, that M sound will turn into, "Mr. Huffman," not Murl. I
just
can't do it and neither can Shirley and I'll bet we have other WC alumni
who
share out little affliction. Also, I want to offer special thanks for
those
lightning-fast responses for someone to contact his daughter's FaceBook
page
and tell her how to contact me with direct info. Those people are
1964's
KARL R. BURRUS, 1971's RITA G. JUSTICE, and 1981's TODD R.
CARROLL. How
many more there could have been, of course, and simply unknown to me,
is
anybody's guess, but thanks to all.
So now, we return to, "our regular news," as it seems MEH, as well as
myself
are going to get to see a few more sunrises. I know both he and I are
so
grateful for all of you and your good wishes and your willingness to help
in
any possible way. This bulletin, inparticularly, is going to be so long,
I
fear some of you will abandon the effort, but hopefully, you'll return
and
finish reading it, eventually.
Let's back up just a bit, and recap some highlights of the efforts of
1960's
THOS. L. WOLF, JR., to get older grad classes posted on the walls of
WCHS.
Remember that? So many people positively and instantly responded to
that.
On July 25, I got an e-mail note from 1954's JOHN E. CROY, in which
he
expressed great interest in the project, too, and wishes to
contribute.
Naturally, I referred him to you, Tom. There was also an e-mail from
Alumni
Treasurer, 1970's GARY E. JOHNSON, in which he has volunteered to track
and
log all funds for the project. Gary does such a fantastic job with
the
alumni committee and I'm sure it would be the same for this project.
From the indefatigable MURL E. HUFFMAN, himself, I received a note of
thanks
on July 16, in which he thanked me for my anniversary card to him and
Marj
on the occasion of their second, which was July 17. He said things
were
going well and she hadn't yet thrown him out. Ha! Who knew what was
going
to happen just under 2 weeks later, at that point? He did mention
Marj
having eyesight trouble, due to the onset of macular degeneration.
From 1963's LEE JEAN JORDAN came a request to assist with the location of
a
few classmates, as this is their 50th, of course. Among the missing
in
their research was DOUGLAS M. MAYS (I was able to resolve this one),
ANNA
MAE POWELL, WM. R. PHILLIPS, and BEVERLY K. LIGHT. I had seen Beverly
at
their 45th and we talked at length, so I think she's in the area. I
don't
know a thing about Anna Mae or Bill, though. So if you are in contact
with
any of these people on the 1963 list, with the exception of Doug,
please

) Thanks so much.
Since her return from Henderson, Nevada, 1961's P. LYNNETTE GARRETT is
now
in touch more often and I'm getting e-mail from her Germantown home
again.
She had her hands full, getting it open again and livable after being
gone
for about 9 months. She also suffered extensive injuries in a head-on
crash
in Henderson, back in May, I learned, and she's fine now. She was not
at
fault in the crash.
In the last bulletin, I'm thinking I reported the passing of BETTY J.
HARMAN
as the class of 1945. As it happens, that was in error. Betty was
actually
in the 1947 class, and that correction came to me from 1949's ROBT.
E.
HOFFMAN. Thanks, Bob. In yet another correction, it seems I mistyped
the
phone number (office? cell?) of 1970's INDY JO GRISSOM. It's 937
914-0208.
Sorry, Indy.
We also got in a couple blurbs on KIRK D. BEARD, who's interested in
the
1970s yearbooks. If he's WC, then I'll sell to him, if he contacts me and
I
have the ones he wants. Indy wrote she thinks he's in the 1979
class. NANCY
J. ERTEL, 1961, says he has a FaceBook website. If anyone wants to give
him
my e-mail, he can contact me and we'll go from there. As you all know, I
don
t do FaceBook. Since I'm on that topic, will someone please contact GARY
L.
SIZER, 1959, and get his e-mail for me. He's on FaceBook and wrote to
ask
if I would, "friend him." I'm none to sure how that works, don't want
to
know, but will sure write him if I get an e-mail address.
From 1961's JACK L. GODBY came the comment we had too many obits, in
the
last one. Well, I'm sure in agreement with that one, Jack, but what can
we
do? I hate every, single one I report and, after privately polling many
of
you, in years past, have found our readers definitely want to know
about
them so I continue the unpleasant task of reporting them. I see no
other
option, sadly.
Remember when we added 1960's WM. H. ARNOLD in the last bulletin? Well,
he
asked about a lot of our class members and I don't think there was a one
for
whom I didn't have some sort of contact. I do hope you contacted them,
Bill
I'm sure, if you do, you're going to get responses. This bulletin is
no
exception and, to my amazement, we continue to add alumni to our
readers
list, even after 13 years of doing them. From 1962, we now welcome
GLORIA
JEAN COUNTS, and I'm sure many of us rememb
er her. We're so glad to have you on the list, Jean, and I'm very
flattered
you asked to be added. I do hope you enjoy the long reads. Ha!
Also coming on board is none other than 1954's homecoming queen, JANICE
K.
WIREMAN. Her name was instantly recognizable to me and I had a
clear,
mental picture of her senior photo, instantly. I don't know how she
heard
about us, but somehow, word spreads far and wide. Janice resides in
Cincinnati with her husband, Thos. L. Turner. She joins the ranks of
at
least 3 other homecoming queens who are on our readers list, and I'll
bet
there may be more, and I just don't know it. Enjoy the read, Janice,
and
welcome aboard.
Does anyone out there know who JANET MARCUM is? I've got a report from
1961
s P. LYNNETTE GARRETT, telling me she passed away in Tennessee. Is
this
correct? I don't know the class year and the only people who come to
mind
are 1959's GARY MARCUM and 1961's CONNIE MARCUM. So if either of you
is
reading this, can you clarify anything or confirm? Thanks, Lynn.
We've regained 1956's JOSEPH F. SNELL (haven't we, Joe?) who had not
been
receiving. I think it was my fault. I'm now trying to track about 500
of
us and keep everyone in the right alpha list and do the e-mail changes
when
they occur and add the new one to the list. When Joe changed his e-mail,
I
think I may have failed to do the input back into the correct alpha
list.
Be forewarned, everyone! If you go a couple months and don't get a
bulletin
let me know, so I can verify I haven't lost you, through one of my
forgetful stunts, will you?
We had a similar glitch, I thought, when I heard from 1954's FREDA P.
FLETCHER, on behalf of her and her son, 1975's Dr. MARK T. SCHROEPPEL,
Ph.D.
But we got Freda all squared away, after all, and Mark wrote to tell me
he
s getting everything I send. So I didn't have to do too much on that
one.
We do have a few travels to report. From 1955's C. ELAINE BARKER came
a
report she and her spouse had just returned from a 2-week trip to
Europe.
They'll also be heading up to North Carolina, come September, for a
little
stay in the cool mountain air. Once again, last month, 1958's BRUCE
E.
CHENOWETH found himself in New Hampshire, squiring significant other
and
hiking devotee, 1971's PATTY JO WHEELBARGER, through the New England
countryside. She hikes a number of miles and he catches up to her in
the
van at predetermined locations.
There was also a recent report from 1957's SHIRLEY ANN HILE, regarding
a
trip with her husband to the nearby (to me) city of Rogersville,
Tennessee,
for a family reunion. I believe it was Jack's family. There's a
lovely
park in that little town. Is that where you all went, Shirley? They're
now
back home and experienced a safe trip.
From 1960's MICHAEL S. WEST came a reminder of the recent passing of
our
wonderful classmate, KEITH H. CLENDENON. It was a memorial book online
and
I was so fond of Keith and so saddened by his tragic death. Of course,
I
signed it, as I'm sure many of you did, too. Thanks, Mike.
Unfortunately, yes, we have other deaths to report, and I may as well
get
those out of the way, now. I received word from 1960's THOS. L. WOLF,
JR.,
of the death of the spouse of one of the WC faculty.
Some may recall gym teacher and assistant principal JANET E. BARKER, who
was
long included on our readers list, then made the e-mail lost
list. Her
husband, Kenneth, passed away in late July. Tom attended his service
and
wrote of seeing many former and current faculty present.
From 1970's RITA G. JUSTICE came a report of the death of NICHOLAS R.
SCHMALENBERGER, Class of 1969. She wrote he died of natural causes, but
he'd
have been just 62, I think, so that seems odd, but surely not
impossible.
She wrote he died July 21. She got the info from FaceBook, posted by
his
daughter, HEIDI SCHMALENBERGER, who has just signed onto the bulletin
list,
herself. We offer condolences to you, Heidi, upon the recent loss of
your
father. Let's all include Heidi's daughter, Rachel, in all our good
thoughts and prayers, as she's currently battling cancer at the tender
age
of 24.
I must say, I'm thrilled to have you on board, Heidi, as you're in the
1989
class and I want to cultivate sign-ons from the 1980s forward,
especially.
We need our younger alumni to join the crowd. It is my hope someone
with
writing skills and great interest will eventually step to the forefront
and
take over the writing of these bulletins. I'm not planning to go
anywhere
soon (I hope), but I am going on 72, and I'd sure hate to think these
bulletins will die as soon as I do. So all you, "youngsters," give
that
some serious thought and consideration.
Digressing again! (Siiiigggghhhh!) Back to the business at hand. I
received e-mail from 1960's LINDA LEE SHANK in which she reported the
death
of the mother of our classmate, MADELEINE D. CAMPBELL. I remember
Madeleine
s mother vividly, of course, since she (Madeleine) and I went clear
through
all 12 school years together, but were also in Zion Evangelical
Lutheran
Church on each and every Sunday of our childhood years. We also went
through
Lutheran Catechism instruction in the same class for two years and
were
confirmed together. I believe her mother was 96 and she died on July
19.
Madeleine had notified me, directly, at the time. Thanks, Linda, for
the
reminder. I hope you were able to reach Madeleine. We all extend
good
wishes and condolences to you, Madeleine.
Finally, an e-mail came from 1958's BILL R. HOWARD to inform me of
the
passing of the wife of JAS. L. FORSYTH, 1956. Her name was Joyce
Jackson
Forsyth, they'd been married 51 years and lived in WC at the time of
her
death. She died August 1, having battled breast cancer for over 6 years,
as
I understand it. Jim is the elder brother of R. MICHAEL FORSYTH,
1961. We
all offer condolences to the entire Forsyth family. Thanks, Bill.
We will move from this depressing topic and try to focus on more
pleasant
things. Did you get to read the travelogue of the east coast trip taken
by
1960's GERALD A. FULLER and his WC-honorary wife, Rebecca A. Fuller? It
was
more interesting than I can ever write here and has great photos with
it,
too. I loved it all. They went everywhere and they also visited with
Jerry
s elder brother, 1959's ROBT. H. FULLER, and his wife, Mary
Ellen. They
reside in New York state. Thanks, Becky, that was a really great
report!
From JERRY R. GRAHAM, 1954, came a request for contact info on my list
of
people from both his class and 1955. I'm afraid I had precious little
to
offer, probably no more than 20 in both of them. But it is my hope he
will
be able to contact those people and possibly find a few more, in the
process
He is already working on his class' 60th for 2014 and of course,
they're
inviting 1955, too. I'm sure, as has become the practice over the
years,
though, any and all WC would be welcomed. If any of you do have
contact
info for anyone in those two classes, please contact Jerry and convey
that
information to him. I know he would be very appreciative. His e-mail is

Also from Tom Wolf came a curiosity-type e-mail, querying when MEH
first
appeared in a yearbook. I got busy and was able to find, through my
extensive collection, his first photo appeared in the 1947 book. He was
not
in any of the prior years and would've turned 27 years old during the
December prior to that printing. He's in every book since then, aside
from
the more recent ones. But I think Tom was looking for something
different
and I don't yet know what. So keep me informed when you find what
you're
trying to find, Tom.
It's possible this may be the last WNR before our weekend. Be sure to be
at
Ron's Pizza on Thursday night (Oct. 10), then Moraine City Frisch's
on
Friday eve, Miami Shores' Rec Center Saturday at 1pm, and the crown
jewel
event of the dinner/dance on Saturday eve at 6. Get those reservations
sent
in promptly and don't wait until the last minute, as I tend to do,
okay?
Remember my mention of Sonny Flaherty? Well, I'll be darned if
1970's
VICKIEJO GILBERT didn't send me some pretty interesting trivia about
him. I
know many of our 1950s and 1960s folks recall him as a noted local
entertainer, "back in the day." Anyway, to my amazement, also playing
drums
with him, way back then, was one of my classmates, ROBT. G. LAMB. I
haven't
heard anything in years about Bob. But Vickie has photos accompanying
this
narrative. As soon as I complete this bulletin and send it, I'm also
going

Curiosity overcomes me about some of the folks from whom I haven't heard

time. Also, it's been a very long while since I've heard from our
in-house
fashionistas, 1960's T. BARRY RUSSELLO and his 1959 spouse BETSY R.
MURPHY.
Did you two retire and move to Florida? Tell me what's
happening! Has
anyone spoken to one of WC's most unforgettable characters, WALLACE
W.
ROBBINS? I'm going to have to call him, I guess.
All right, gang, believe it or not, I've finally reached the conclusion
of
this one. I will offer my apology to all of you for its great
length. But
we've never before had one bulletin period, within which I suffered a
mini-stroke and MEH had heart surgery, have we? I sure didn't want to
omit
any names, either! This typing is helping bring back better feeling in
my
right thumb and right index finger, by the way. Ha! I leave each of

YOUR Support Needed - Restore Class Pictures
...and you thought only OLD movies needed to be restored!

(Okay, gang! This is the follow-up from Tom Wolf, for the project which
was sent earlier today, in the special bulletin. Skip past me on the response.
I know nothing. Tom's the guy who's doing this. I'm merely the messenger.
It's great, though, isn't it?)
Dear all,
I did not intend for the news of the project to go out this fast, but I
underestimate Bonnie.
Let me give you a Bonnie-type report.
Those of you who graduated before 1961 and for a few years after that
know that class graduation pictures hung on the walls of the high school then
junior high on the second floor. Sometime in the 70s, a remodeling project
involving suspended ceilings on that floor resulted in the pictures being taken
down. They were put in a room in the basement and became endangered. I worked
there and saw them. There were broken frames and broken glass. It was a near
miracle that they survived.
I will give credit to Dickinson Guiler, assistant superintendent, and
Dick Mumma, business manager, for securing the pictures and removing them from
danger. Then came Calvin Bell, a WC graduate and Miamisburg businessman whose
name is still a part of Bell Vault and Monument in Miamisburg. He provided
funding for pictures of the pictures to be taken and made a part of a book,
which I will refer to as THE BOOK. Again, Mr. Guiler secured THE BOOK and kept
it at Central Office. After he retired and died, Jackie Kreitzer Wilson secured
THE BOOK It made appearances at many alumni gatherings for years.
THE BOOK is now back at Central Office. It is priceless, irreplaceable.
You can thank the above mentioned people for making it available today.
That leads us to where we are today. I cannot stess enough how impressive
the new version of the pictures will be. Modern technology is wonderful.
Instead of being in a book in a drawer, the pictues will be on a wall for
many to see.
Again, I did not intend for all this to come out so soon. I have yet to
hear from anyone with the alumni association. I want Gary Johnson to handle all
your donations if he is willing. I have already gotten several comments and
donors. But I ask you to just be patient until we figure out how we are going to
handle the donations.
I guarantee you that this will be a project that you all can be proud of.
Just hold on to your money a bit until things are set up.

Murl Huffman News!
Whew!!! After all that sleuthing, I came up with a big, blank slate. However, a couple of you came up with a few tidbits, so we all now know MEH is recovering satisfactorily, has Marge there, as well as his daughter, is eating, generally doing very well, and as one report put it, "sassy as ever." No, I won't be naming the sources for this one, as I fear it might cost someone a job. You see, it's obvious, from at least two of my reports, one or more of the nurses, "sang like a canary," and I know that wasn't supposed to happen, according to current laws governing medical disclosure. So I'll let it rest, at that, and will stand on journalistic confidentiality. So we've now come through yet another crisis together and all is well. He's doing wonderfully, and hey, so am I! So we collectively breathe another huge sigh of relief and prepare for a weekend of fun, safety, and good health. Best to all.

Our e-mail lost list is considerably reduced, now that I've deleted
(very
grudgingly and regrettably) all the ones which had been returned to me

least 3 times and, in some cases, 6 times. I come near to
hyperventilation
when I actually have to delete one of us. I hate losing a single person.
But
I did have one reject, so far, and it's 1961's MICHAEL J. HARRIS. I
feel
certain he's simply changed his e-mail address and failed to notify me,
so
if anyone is in contact with him, please remind him to do so. This is
the
first time he's ever had a reject. I also got an explanation from
1961's
PAUL R. BEARDSLEY, as to LILY K. "KITTY" BURDETTE. He told me Kitty
doesn't
have a computer at home and she had been receiving the bulletins at her
work
I'm assuming she has quit working. Thanks, Paul, but do tell Kitty we
want
her back on the readers list, ASAP. So when she gets a PC, let me know
right
away. We do have just a few others, and let's see if we can get these
people

, is returned saying no such address exists. We finally retrieved
1964's
GEORGE E. ERTEL, as he wrote me to contact DAVID A. COOPER. So I
updated
George, and we can remove him from this list. George, when you
change
e-mail address, please put me on your to-be-notified-immediately

all people, I've also lost 1960's EULA FAYE BAILEY. We talk regularly,
so
will get this resolved. I recall her telling me she was having some
problem
and had changed it.
There was an auto-reply from gallivantin' LEE JEAN JORDAN, 1963. When I
get
those, I always find myself wondering whether or not they actually
ever
receive the bulletins, or does it just go to some sort of cyberspace
trash
can? Does anyone know? Such a response also arrived from 1971's PHYLLIS
ANN
SELLARS. She soon contacted me, though, with an e-mail update, so I
suspect they actually do receive those. Thanks, Phyllis. Also updating
an
e-mail address is 1961's JUDITH L. SAMUELS, who's had to abandon her
web.tv
address she's had for years and years. I guess they're going out of
business, from what she's written.
In the past two hours, on this day, 1958's BRUCE E. CHENOWETH just left
my
huse. He's again in the area, due to the dedicated, passionate interest
in
hiking, of his significant other,1971's PATTY JO WHEELBARGER. Yesterday,
she
did about 20 miles on the Appalachian Trail, attended Trail Days in
Damascus, Virginia, continued southward until he was nearer to my house
than
returning to an Abingdon, Virginia, motel room they had, so we hung out
for
several hours. Tomorrow, Patty will be doing 30 miles, and they'll return
to
Ohio on Tuesday. Patty is a walking muscle, at about 4'11" and maybe 95
lbs.
She's the perfect candidate for, "Survivor," and I'll bet she'd win,
hands
down. She will live to be 100, very easily.
Right after Bruce left, the phone rang and one of my very favorite
people
was on the other end, 1960's CHAS. A. HIGH, JR. As you're all aware,
Charlie
and I maintain steady contact. Among those about whom he enquired were
EULA
FAYE BAILEY, CHAS. V. CARTER, WALLACE W. ROBBINS, and 1961's PAUL R.
BEARDSLEY. If anyone wants to contact Charlie, his number is 937
233-3193,
and he still lives in Huber Heights on Fishburg Road. Be sure to talk
when
the machine answers. When he hears you're not a solicitor, he'll pick
up,
if he's there. But do leave a message.
Corrections: Don't ask me why, but I seem to do this, from time to time.
I
promise, I know by heart nearly every class year on my readers list.
Nevertheless, I still have an error, now and then. Just such was the case
in
my last one when I put 1970's INDY JO GRISSOM in the 1971 class. The
same
goes for 1964 class member, TERRY LEE WILSON, whom I erroneously listed
as
1963. Sometimes, it's a typo and sometimes, it's just a plain goof. In
any
case, apologies to both. Indy told me about hers and I got an e-mail
from
Terry's classmate, RICKEY A. BUSCH, to tell me of that one. Thanks,
Rick.
Rick was also championing your book, Terry. Like me, he thought it
was
humorous and entertaining. We all wish you great success. By the way,
Terry
wrote he's doing all right so far with thyroid cancer medical t
treatment. Let's all keep him in our good thoughts and prayers.
A message arrived from 1958's RONALD D. "TOM" FEE, in which he advised
of
the illness of his wife, Sandi. Initially, he said, they had thought she
had
cancer. The good news is, she doesn't. It's tuberculosis. In a way, he
wrote
that's almost good news, if she had to be sick at all, as the TB is
far
easier to treat. Of course, Tom, we all wish Sandi well and hope for
her
speedy and full recovery.
Good words came from 1961's DALLAS K. MATHIS, who wrote he so enjoyed
the
bulletin, and how it reminded him of such good memories. Thanks, Dallas,
and
I enjoy those memories, too. The world is so different now, it's just
unbelievable to me, as I'm sure is the case for everyone of our
generation.
I
got similar nice words from PAUL R. BEARDSLEY, who also solved the
mystery
for us on the loss of LILY K. "KITTY" BURDETTE, from our readers list.
She
got her bulletins at work, doesn't now have a PC, and Paul was kind
enough
to print a copy for her. We're all still thinking about you, Kitty, so
let
us know how you're doing, okay? Thanks, Paul. RONNIE R. WHEELER opined
the
reports keep us all young. Well, that would be great, Ron! I hope
you're
right.
From 1961's CONNIE K. STREETE came news of the death of her
classmate,
CHARLOTTE ANN MISENHEIMER. She reported her source as BEVERLY I. STOKES
and
said Charlotte had died in Florida. I assume that's where she lived.
That's
all I have, so if any of you have further info, please let me know. Also,
we
offer condolences to Connie on the loss of her mother, last November.

Okay, it's now July 15, and I'm running incredibly behind my
self-imposed
deadline for this bulletin. It's possible I may repeat
something. Remember
I'm writing this over a period of 8-9 weeks, while most of you are
reading
it in one, fell swoop (I'm assuming). So forgive me if I do
that. I'm
going to make every effort to complete this one, this week.
Backing way up to June 11, I received a welcome e-mail from dear friend
and
1961 class president, JOHN W. OBERLIES, JR. As it happens, John
announced
he's semi-retired now and has sold his engineering business in
Indianapolis.
However, he will remain as a consultant for a spell. So he's not quite
a
leisurely guy, just yet, but he's getting there. We also rehashed a few
of
our childhood stunts and memories, as John was a close member of,
"the
in-crowd," of my teenage years. Stay healthy, John, and enjoy the
leisure
time you have. I hope this means we'll be seeing more of you at our
annual
alumni weekend.
Currently, I'm still in touch with 1958's DONALD I. "DON" MCCOY, with whom
I
m just dying to get back my homeowners policy. He continues to work on
it
for me. He's also still doing his musical tours with wife Fran, and
doing
what he can for his class' 55th, this October.
Well, I got a wonderful invitation to the grand opening of Bront
Machining,
the business owned by 1960's GARY L. WARLAUMONT. He has moved it into
new
quarters and I'm sure it's wonderful. I'd sure have liked to be
there.
Thank you for the invitation, Gary, and it looks absolutely beautiful.
I
wish you all the success in the world and you sure must doing
something
right. Guess what, gang? The prominent colors on the front of the
building
are red and black. No surprise there. Once a Pirate, always a Pirate! If
you
attended give me a report. It's at 2601 W. Dorothy Lane in Moraine. Do go
by
and have a look. I knew Gary's parents very well, Mabel and Henry, and
what
great people they were. Both had a spectacular sense of humor and
their
day-to-day life and exchanges would've made for a smash-hit sitcom, I
assure
you.
By the way, if you've never seen a photo of Gary's elder son (D. MARK
WARLAUMONT, 1978, I think) with 1961's SALLY L. GILLETTE, you'd be amazed
by
the resemblance to Sally. She sent me one, just recently, and this young
man
is the spitting imagine of his mother. I was just floored by the
uncanny
resemblance. He looks almost like the male version of a taller Sally.
We want to promote all WC business people as much as possible. Keeping
that
in mind, let's get to 1970's INDY JO GRISSOM, who's wed to 1971's HUGH
ALLEN
SUMNER. She's a realtor, with 34 years of experience. She's with
Coldwell
Banker Heritage Realtors in Springboro, and her number is 937 214-0208.
Indy
says she specializes in log homes, but does all sorts of residential
listings, as well as land.
Okay, the date is now June 7, and I have to get back at it. It slips
away
from us, so very quickly, if we don't. From the lovely LORNA D.
TROUTMAN,
1958, came notice of her 12th anniversary with the hunky spouse, Roger
M.
Chico" Lopez III. It was wonderful to read they remain blissfully happy
and
she's thrilled to be beginning her 13th year with him. I know we all
offer
congratulations to Lorna and Chico. (I also know a few of you guys are
out
there, crying in your beer, because you missed out on lovely Lorna.)
Lorna kept me up to date on the awful fires, too. I was concerned for
her,
living in Arizona, but she was far away from the danger. She also
checked
on 1960's class president, LONNIE M. THACKER, who lives there with his
1960
spouse, LINDA J. SNELL. I also spoke to Linda, directly, not long
after
that. Chico and Lorna live very near to Lonnie and Linda. I hope you
all
get together. Lorna is also working on 1958's 55th, doing lots of
stuff.
Chico is a talented photographer and has volunteered his services for
Lorna
and her classmates.

ever
found and has the very best recipes. Yes, I already knew that. Take a

gang. You just might agree. Judy remains deeply involved in the local
VFW,
as well as the local Eagles Aerie, of which chapter she is a past
president.
Let's fast-forward a bit and it's now June 12, the first birthday of
Connor
Benjamin Gill. Who's that? Of course, you know I'm going to tell you.
He's
the great-grandson of 1960's class VP, THOS. D. YOUNG and wife, Sandi
L.
Young, my treasured friends of many, many years. Sandi and I spoke just
last
night for a while and she told me Connor's birthday party had been held
on
Sunday. Congrats to Tom and Sandi on this first great-grandchild. I
have
photos and he's absolutely gorgeous!
From my pal, Bruce, came what are now 53-year-old photos of him, from
his
first marriage to my dear, dear high school friend, the late W. SUSAN
DOGGETT. It was sure fun to look at those again. She was truly gorgeous,
and
Bruce, you looked great, too. Isn't it disappointing to know we can't
continue to look the same as we did when we were in our teens and 20s? But
I
m okay with that and just happy to still be here.
Who out there remembers the Dayton area singer from the 1950s and
1960s
named Sonny Flaherty? I know the name rang a bell and 1958's BILL R.
HOWARD
sent me some trivia on him, but I couldn't quite place him, until Bill
told
me. Hey, Bill! How are you doing these days? I haven't heard from you
for
a bit, so am getting a little worried. Give us a report on how it's
going,
will you? (Okay, I've heard from him, since writing this.)
What is the saying, "Even the best-laid plans can go awry," or
something
like that? Well, that's just what happened to me on May 25. I was
supposed
to go to the 90th birthday bash for the mother of EULA FAYE BAILEY, 1960.
It
was held in Cleveland, Tennessee, only about 175 miles from me, for
Georgia Bailey Meyers, who remarried a Tennessee childhood friend just
2
years ago and now lives in the same state as me. My presence there,
however
wasn't going to happen. A bug got hold of me and my voice was raspy
or
non-existent, for days. It took me about 2 weeks to get back to normal.
I
was terribly disappointed. Not only was Eula Faye there, but 1958's BRUCE
E
CHENOWETH also drove down from WC for the event, as well as 1960's MICHAEL
S
WEST, with wife Sally, who came from Gatlinburg. Mike sent photos and
good
report on the event as did Bruce. Still, I'd have liked to have been
there,
as planned.
This next thing is a real heartbreaker and it comes from 1959's GARY
E.
BARNES. On May 14, one MARIE NICOLE BALLARD, age 21, passed away in
North
Carolina. I'm sure she was in the class of 2010, probably. Perhaps
someone
out there knows. I didn't read a cause of death, so don't know, but
her
services and burial were held in Kettering on May 24. Very sad.
Sincerest
condolences go to her family and friends. Thanks, Gary.
On yet another sad note, we learned of the death of 1961's LYNN C.
ROTHWELL,
who was a retired dispatcher with WCPD. She died May 13 and her funeral
held
at Swart's in WC. Now, I must tell you, I went through every photo, one
by
one, in th class of 1961. I didn't find Lynn. This notice was sent to me
by
RITA GAIL JUSTICE of 1970. If Lynn was in the 1961 class, I don't know
why
her photo wasn't there, unless she'd dropped out before the senior
yearbook.
Does anyone know for sure? I just want to be certain we have the class
year
correct. Thanks, Rita.
Rita also sent notice of the May 18 death GREGORY DALE SILER, class of
1970,
I believe. He was a Moraine firefighter and a member of Miami Shores
Baptist
Church, where his funeral was held. At 62, he left us way too soon. We
offer
condolences to family and friends for both Lynn and Greg. Thanks again,

There was also a death on May 31, reported Rita, for a KEITH A WRIGHT.
She
and I are both wondering if he's WC or not, possibly 1969-1970 class.
Does
anyone know? While Rita was writing me about these, she made the
comment
about how wonderful WC people are. Well, you'll sure get no argument
from
this camp, Rita, that's for sure.
Our musical troubadour, 1958's DONALD I. "DON" MCCOY, has succeeded
in
securing my bond for my Notary Public commission. Thanks, Don. Please
continue to work on my homeowners policy and my auto insurance. I
despise
the company with whom I'm now doing business! Thanks for your
efforts.
For all of you who do not already know this, if you maintain contact
with
1960's GERALD A. FULLER, please send him an e-mail, if you haven't done
so,
already, in recent weeks. He and Becky got a new computer and somehow,
in
the process, all their e-mail addresses got dumped in the transition.

Ah, for the good, ol' days! That was when I used to have to clear my
e-mail
at least twice a day, and there would always be at least 20-25 e-mails

In the early 1990s, they were called chat rooms and they really weren't
all
that successful But fast-forward 20-25 years, put a new label on them and
a
few new tweaks, and we've got an international sensation. I'm such an
old
fart, though, and am sticking to e-mail. So that's it for me.
My news from 1958's BILL R. HOWARD is that of good spirits and great
anticipation of the 55th. He says he's doing all right, as he continues
to
fight his cancer and is keeping a positive outlook. I don't know if I
could
do the same. As always, Bill, we're all pullin' for ya'. No one is
looking
forward to the 55th gathering for the 1958 class, more than Bill, I can
tell
you that, for sure. Bill also told me recently, he wants to get
together
with 1958's DAVID L. HOWARD and W. BAILEY HAWKINS and set up a visit
with
1960's CHAS. A. HIGH, JR. Did you get that done yet, Bill? If you do,
be
sure to let me know how it goes. Under a mile from Charlie lives
1960s'
PHILLIP D. HOWARD with his 1967 wife, MARIAN K. HUSSEY. Both those
guys
have had quite a time with health issues, and I know both would be
thrilled
to see all of you. Phil just celebrated a birthday July 12 and Charlie's
was
June 24.
Another one in my class was STEVEN M. KOKOT, whose birthday is June
16. We
hope all of you had a wonderful day.
Back on June 23, an e-mail came from Martha A. Craig, who is now Martha
A.
Taulbee. She's the widow of the late RONALD P. CRAIG, 1960, as you're
all
aware. She remarried on April 6, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. So we
all
wish great happiness and good health to Martha and her new
spouse. What's
his name, Martha? Wow, you went right past my house when you were in
Pigeon
Forge, most likely. Be sure to stop, next time you visit there. Hmmm,
I
wonder if you're now related to the former spouse of EULA FAYE BAILEY,
whose
name is Lennox B. Taulbee, Sr. Are you?
My friend and fellow Miami Shores Kid, as well as WC Pirate, 1961's
P.
LYNNETTE HAWVERMALE, returned from her home in Henderson, Nevada, to
her
home in Germantown, Ohio, on July 9. The past year hasn't been very good
to
Lynn. She lost her younger son last September and her husband during
November. She's looking forward to seeing all her 1961 cronies
again,
though, and getting her Ohio house back in order. Lynn, by the way,
the
phone number you gave me isn't working. I've tried to call you with
that
number and so has cousin Judy. So please check and send us the right
one,
will you?
By now, we're all aware of the efforts of 1960's THOS. L. WOLF, JR., to
get
photos of all the classes. I was overwhelmed with responses from those
who
wish to donate. Tom, I doubt you're going to have a problem at all,
with
gaining the needed funds from alumni. Among those who instantly
responded
were 1954's JERRY R. GRAHAM (class president), 1956's REBECCA J.
POLING,
1958's BILL R. HOWARD, 1959's SANDRA R. KINNEY, 1961's SALLY L.
GILLETTE,
CONNIE KAYE STREETE, RICHARD L. DOLL, and I know there are (or will
be)
dozens of others, if not hundreds. But I again remind all of you, I'm
no
more than the lowly messenger, no one official at all, and contact for
this
must be coordinated through Tom, not me. I've gotten an e-mail from
our
alumni treasurer, 1970's GARY E. JOHNSON, who's volunteering to handle
the
funds. But I'm not the one to contact. I know we'll all pull together
and
get this done. Thanks for letting us know, Tom, and thanks to you,
too,
Gary. By the way, 1954 class president, JERRY R. GRAHAM, also advised me
he
s begun work on his class' 60th anniversary gathering for 2014. If
you've

The WC Football Alumni Club just held an event July 12. I wish I'd
gotten
this bulletin out in time for all of you to know in advance. But I
do
believe I put it in a couple of prior ones, so hopefully, everyone
who
wanted to participate was able to do so. I believe it's the golf
tourney
held at Pipestone and my info always comes from 1988's JAS. A.

she
s whooping it up in Hawaii, while she and spouse, Pastor Larry W.
Matthews,
Ret., are visiting with their daughter and son-in-law on the
beautiful
island state. I hope you're both having a spectacular time, Nancy and
Larry
and stay safe and healthy. Nancy, if you're still over there,
there's

From 1961's NANCY J. ERTEL came a snippet of a FaceBook discussion in
which
she said there are no 1977, 1978, nor 1979 yearbooks available. A
fellow
named Kirk Beard (WC? I don't know, do you?) is the party who wants
them,
and he's apparently on FaceBook, requesting them. I have all of them,
but
don't think I have extras. However, if he's not a WC alumnus, I
wouldn't
allow them to go to him, anyway. Does anyone recognize this name?
From the class of 1945, BETTY JANE HARMAN passed away June 30. She was
born
in WC and her husband was Robt. D. Faulkner. They were good friends
with
1959's GARY E. BARNES, who sent me the notice. Yes, we have
others. It's
just that this one was going along so well, I decided not to put in
the
deaths until we got toward the end. You all know how much I hate that
part.
Anyway, our in-house, master record-keeper for these things is 1965's
STEVEN
F. SHADE, and he's recently sent me the very latest list. I'm going to
list
and name them, precisely as he sent them, even if I've already got it in
the

Calling me from the sunny beaches was 1960's MICHAEL S. WEST. I believe
he
and Sally were in Florida and these two are gallivanting all over the
place.
Bully for you! Keep doing it. It's been a bit since I heard from
our
civics teacher, MURL E. HUFFMAN. But I can tell you this much. His
second
wedding anniversary is July 17. So happy 2nd anniversary to him and
his
lovely spouse, the former MARJORIE L. BOGAN-BURKHARDT. We all wish you
many
happy returns.
Okay, this has been a bit chopped up from the standpoint of chronology and
I
apologize for that. But I promise you, I've recorded every name,
every
snippet, every event, and every piece of news I received for this
bulletin
period. If I, by chance, missed something or recorded something
incorrectly
please do notify me, will you? In the meantime, I'm positively
flabbergasted to realize, come October, I've done these things for 13
years.
I just can't believe that! It's been so fun, thanks to all of
you. In
closing, I leave each of you with my sincere wish for glowing health,
personal safety, great happiness, peaceful serenity, spiritual harmony,
and
