WECATON NEWS REPORT - 28 JUN 2012:

Bonnie Writes:
Fond greetings to all! It's now May 26, and it's been just 5 days, since my last distribution. But e-mail is piling up to the moon and I have to get some of it cleaned out of that folder, or it will be insurmountable, to say the very least. As I await a call, which has been pre-scheduled, for a news interview for my weekly newspaper column, I figured I'd get in a bit of keyboard time---my very favorite thing!
Before I start my forwarders list, let me just write, if you normally skip past this section, please don't. Why? Well, I want you to read the names in this list. No, there's no news in it, that's true. But if you read all the names, it's very possible you're going to find an old pal listed, for whom you've been searching. If the pal's name appears in this list, then it's a home run, and bingo! You've found that person and it means I can quickly reconnect the two of you, if you just send me an e-mail, okay? So here we go: 1949's ROBT. E. HOFFMAN; 1954's FREDA P. FLETCHER; 1955's JERRY L. DAVIS; 1956's ANN C. WEIDLE; 1957's BETTY LEE CARROLL, RALPH H. WARNER, DARELL L. TOBIAS, ERCELL P. PHILLIPS, SHIRLEY A. HILE; 1958's RONALD D. "TOM" FEE, DONALD I. MCCOY, WM. R. HOWARD, W. BAILEY HAWKINS; 1959's GARY E. BARNES, BETSY R. MURPHY;1960's C. SUE MCCLOUD, STEVEN M. KOKOT, DELORES K. "DEDE" FAHRNEY, DANNY L. WALTERS, GERALD A. FULLER, EULA FAYE BAILEY, WM. O WALKER, J. DAVID MAYS, RONNIE R. WHEELER, WM. E. "BUDDY" STOVER
, LARRY M. PENDLEY; 1961's P. LYNNETTE GARRETT; CONNIE K. STREETE, GARY R.FRANK, SHARON KAYE WENDELKEN, RICHARD L. DOLL, PAUL R. BEARDSLEY, SANDRA E. BROCK; 1962's BARBARA T. O'NEAL, RICHARD C. CALL, JACKQUELYN S. HAINES; 1969's CAROLYN JEAN COOK, ROBT. E. THARPE; 1971's PAMELA K. SHIPLEY; 1988's JAS. A MCGUIRE; and---drumroll--- teacher JAS. C. JOHNSON.
So now, we're down to our, "e-mail lost," list and I do have an update or two. If you've got current contact info (prefer-
ably a working e-mail address), please let me know. They are teacher DAVID E. COLLINS; 1953's B, DEAN ELLIS; 1954's CAROLYN R. GILLETTE; 1958's KEITH E. ANDERSON (as usual
); 1959's CAROLYN E. EUBANK (and I've got to check on this, as VICKIE JO GILBERT, 1970, just updated me on this one, so it's a mystery) ; 1963's JOYCE ANN KUHN. (Footnote:
During this bulletin period, I've had a lengthy exchange with teacher DAVID E. COLLINS. So he's back on our readers list. He has moved to Florida, he told me, and is doing all right, so far. But like me, he's noticed the intense and relentless heat. I have a current, working e-mail for him, so he is no longer on the, "e-mail lost,"list.)
On that one, miles-long e-mail address in the last bulletin---well, we've managed to solve that mystery, at least a bit.
ROGER D. LUCAS, 1968, was once employed there. It's Patterson/Pope, as transmitted by 1960's MICHAEL S. WEST. That business address, understandably, doesn't wish to receive our bulletins anymore. So I've got to delete Roger from the readers list, which means I need someone to track him down for me, again. Can that someone be you, his sibling, 1960's BRENDA J. LUCAS? We want Roger back on the readers list!
KAREN L. THROCKMORTON, 1969, was kind enough to write and ask me to resend her copy of the April 14 bulletin, as it was rejected. So I was glad to know that and I resent it, successfully. However, she did receive the one of May 21, so I'm not quite sure what may have been the glitch. Thanks for letting me know, Karen.
We've got 1958's DAVID L. HOWARD all squared away, too. I recall getting one reject on you, Dave, but all seems to be okay now, so many thanks for checking in and verifying your info. As you all know, we don't want to lose a one of us!
In an effort to help locate teacher DAVID E. COLLINS, I'm sure, I got an e-mail from 1968's ROBT. D. LOVETT, asking if Mr. Collins didn't marry 1961's CHRIS L. CLEARY. I wrote back to bring him up to date, so he'd know I would not be able to locate him through Chris. So if anyone is aware of his current e-mail address, do please let me know. (Disregard this now, of course. I'm leaving the paragraph stand, though, in the interest of mentioning Bob.)
Our WC computer guru, 1958's NICHOLAS P. WOLARY, wrote me his assessment of why my PC sometimes sends doubles on the bulletins, to different addresses, as well as how to solve that (hopefully). So I'll be using those methods, Nick, and thanks. We'll see where it goes.
JAS. L. LINDSEY, 1959, sent e-mail, again, and once again, it was about DONNIE SCHAAF. I wonder if Donnie knows how immortal he is, among WC folks, now. Jim wrote to tell me Donnie didn't officially graduate. So I responded to let him know we all pretty much knew that part, we just wanted to solve the original class year, once and for all. So far, that's now been done by 1959's GARY E. BARNES, who was very sure Donnie was not in the 1959 class (and so was I). So he did due diligence, and surely enough, found him among the 1958 faces, way back in 1952. So no, he wasn't originally in the 1959 class. Just for the record, folks, and with no disre
-spect intended, believe me, I'm all done with writing about Donnie Schaaf, no matter who sends me what. As of this moment, "Mystery solved," once and for all. May he rest in peace.
It is with great regret, I inform you all of the death of 1966's NANCY L. BOWMAN. She was my former step-sister and the younger daughter of the late, great WOODROW W. "WOODY" BOWMAN, proprietor of the also-late-great, Woody's Super-market, from 1944-1999. She's also the younger sibling of 1959's LARRY A. BOWMAN, 1960's BEVERLY A. BOWMAN, and elder sibling of DANIEL L. BOWMAN (was he 1968?). She'd had some surgery and some sort of complications arose, possibly blood clots. She passed away this morning (May 26). My deepest thanks to 1960's EULA FAYE BAILEY for telephoning this to me. I'm sure most of you were already aware, by the time you read this. I'm simply floored by this news. I know we all extend our deepest condolences to the entire Bowman family.
Did any of you know we lost 1984's DEBORAH M. DAVIS on June 7? She was but 45 and her surname upon her death was Battles. She was the daughter of 1962's REBECCA A. LEIWIG, who took the time to let me know, so I could in turn, let all of you know. It goes without even saying it, Becky, we are all deeply saddened by your loss and wish you well in adjusting to this tragedy. Thank you for letting me know of your daughter's death.
Another reminder of the July 13 WC Pipestone Golfing event arrived from 1988's JAS. A. MCGUIRE. I think this bulletin will likely be distributed prior to that date, and I had it listed in the last bulletin, also, so if you want to be part of this golf event, be sure to contact Pipestone (or Jim) in time to make your arrangements. Thanks again, Jim.
The indefatigable FREDA P. FLETCHER, 1954, again wrote of husband, Larry L. Green, and how he made a decision to buy a place in her own neighborhood, move everything there, and keep it, for when any of the kids are visiting. Well, Freda, that's a pretty good idea, to be sure. I've seen the time, even with the gigantic place I have, when I wished I had an extra place for the kids. Ha!
Freda doesn't live far from 1955's C. ELAINE BARKER, and Elaine collects cast-off items for her church, says Freda. They resell the items. Freda and Larry will be spending some time again this summer, in their place in Pineola, N.C. Keep your ear to the ground, Freda. If I get a wild hair, I just may visit you. You aren't that far away and I still regret the aborted visit from last year, which was to be you and me and Elaine. I'd still like to do that! Are you reading, Elaine?
You two are so sweet, 1961's JACK L. GODBY and 1971's INDY JO GRISSON, I'll swear! Every time I write one of these, you two are right on the e-mail, letting me know how much you enjoy these and giving me your thanks. GARY E. BARNES does the same thing. I so appreciate that. Many of you, to be fair, are very consistent with that. I appreciate all of you, each and every single one, even if you don't write a word, though.
It is now the holiday, May 28, and my cousin, 1961's JUDITH L. SAMUELS and her husband, Wm. D. Van Cleef, just departed my house yesterday morning. They are back in Florida, of course, and they brought a pair of friends with them, too. We had a wonderful, but brief visit, during which we did a few garage and yard sales (I'm addicted to them and so are they) and dined in several of the nicer eateries. We've resumed our daily e-mails, though, now that they're back home.
On May 24, 1961's NANCY A. HALL and husband, Pastor Larry W. Matthews, Ret., celebrated their 40th (Is that right, Nancy?) wedding anniversary. They now reside in Rockford, Illinois, and I think they'd lived for years, prior to that, in Wisconsin. They wanted to be nearer to children and grandchildren. We all hope it was a great one, Nancy and Larry. Many happy returns.
Like most of us who retire, Larry and Nancy are staying quite busy. They're both still very active in Lutheran pursuits in varying capacities. Nancy sent me a travel report, in fact. It seems they took a cruise all the way up the east coast from Fort Lauderdale to Nova Scotia, stopping at all points along the way, and even sailed inland to other destinations which included Quebec. What a great trip!
Amusingly, Nancy also wrote of the grandson's venture with every kid's school character, Flat Stanley. Now, I can't tell you how many Flat Stanleys have passed through my mailbox
, but believe me, it's been a few. So that brought a smile.
My avid reader, 1961's NANCY J. ERTEL, reported she still got two reports, but I'm going to try Nick's method with this one, and I'll see if any doubles are transmitted this time. When and if it happens again, just please delete all but one.
Okay, hear this! From 1959's GARY E. BARNES, my valued and top field reporter, comes the announcement I'm in the running for MVP for 2011 as writer and editor. Ha! He did not say just what journalistic organization is giving this prestigious award---Ahem!!!---but I sure hope it's no one but all of you. There is no one whose favor I wish to curry, more than all of you! Thanks, Gary.
We all extend sincerest condolences to 1958's ERCELL P. PHILLIPS, whose wife, Betty, passed away on May 29, I believe it was. We're all so very sorry for your tragic loss, Ercell, and we wish you well during this period of difficult adjustment.
BRUCE K. COPSEY, 1958, also died in hospice care and I'm thinking that was on June 1. Bruce had been fighting cancer and as I understand it, he just didn't want to endure further treatment. I understand that, and we send condolences to Bruce's family and friends. This was reported by Gary, too, as well as 1958's WM. E. HOWARD.
We've got headline news from the Brodbeck household, all readers. At the end of May, 1986's AMY L. HAWKINS and her 1985 spouse, D. BRIAN BRODBECK, reclocated to Charlston, South Carolina! That's quite a move. We first congratulate Brian on his retirement from the WCPD, at the end of April. Amy continues to ply her trade as an RN, and as we all know, she's in demand, everywhere with that profession. I also want to make sure everyone knows Amy is 1986. I think I got that wrong, last time.
The Brodbecks have a long WC history, what with Amy's parents being 1958's W. BAILEY HAWKINS and 1962's JACKQUELYN S. HAINES, and Brian's parents being 1958's VINCENT A. BRODBECK and 1960's late DOROTHY J. "DOTTIE
" WILLMAN. Amy writes their children were born in SC, and she feels right at home. As for me, I'm hoping their visiting parents will drop by and see me, on the way to their house. We all wish you great, good fortune, happiness, and good health in your new digs, Amy and Brian!
We have lost 1958's JAS. E. RICHARDSON, spouse of K. JUNE CRUTCHFIELD, also 1958. I'm deeply saddened by his loss. I got to have a great visit with him and June, right here at my house, about 18 months ago. He seemed to be in the pink and was happy as could be. Jim and I walked miles and miles together, on the Miami Shores roads, during the summers. He was always with us all, when we made our summer treks. I'll sure miss knowing he's still with us. I'm so sorry, June, for your loss. Jim's death was reported to me by 1958's WM. R. HOWARD, 1959's GARY E. BARNES, and 1960's PHILLIP D. HOWARD. Jim will be sorely missed by many, and always so fondly remembered.
My friend, 1963's FRANCES L. MOORE remains terribly busy with her cooking website and her family interests. It's been a while since I got to see Fran, but I'm hoping for that to change soon.
Recently, I had a brief exchange with 1959's JOE E. STOMPS. I wanted to check and see how he's doing, since he lost his wife of 49 years, 1961's DONNA RAE PRICE, the loveliest and nicest of ladies, I might add. He says his kids are keeping him busy and he's doing fairly well. Great, Joe, and my door is always open, if you ever want to see the beautiful terrain of Northeastern Tennessee, and hide out in its many scenic, mountainous regions. Stay well.
It's a darned good thing, I suppose, I don't live any nearer to 1956's DOUGLAS H. HOWE, who was a classmate of my late sister, JUDY ANN RISNER. He and I seem to share an equal passion for long-distance touring and Harley-Davidsons, so I feel sure we'd bore to tears, every person within earshot. I guess everything happens for a reason, eh, Doug?
What a wonderful thing he did, though, back in November. It seems it was the 50th anniversary of another of his cronies in ol' WC, 1956's ROBT. LLOYD KRESS and his wife, Marilyn.
So Doug and wife Flo headed south to join the festivities and to take in Key West, afterward, since Flo had never gotten to visit there. On the return trip, reported Doug, they discovered the well-hidden, little secret of Tybee Island, just east of the coast of Savannah. Yes, Doug, that's a nifty place, isn't it? I guess they weren't quite finished yet with traveling, so they headed on to Rhode Island, opting to spend Thanksgiving at the home of Flo's daughter. That sounds like a great trip you both had, Doug, and thanks for that report.
Recently, I've also been in touch with 1961's P. LYNNETTE HAWVERMALE, as she's been back in Germantown for two months or more, now. Husband Frank seems to be doing fairly well and I hope to be able to get in touch with her by phone, very soon. Hang in there, Lynn. I'm going to call.
Lynn told me 1961's PATRICIA A. HAUK is on FaceBook with WALLACE W. ROBBINS. So at last, I know he's okay, at least. If anyone is in touch with Patti, please tell her to tell him to call me (423 726-2268). I haven't spoken to him in about a year, I think it is. Over the past 12 years, that's the longest it's ever been.
Fran also reported the 1961 girls got together for a luncheon on or about June 12. Aside from herself, she wrote there was SALLY L. GILLETTE, DONNA J. RICHARDS, EDNA L. GRAY, SANDRA J. CASEY, CAROLE J. LEWIS, and DOROTHY J. COMBS. How great to know you all do that, and do keep it up, will you?
Another such luncheon report came to me, recently, from my sister-in-law, ANITA RAE MASON, 1956, in which she told me there were about 16 of her 1956 classmates. She did not remember all the names, though, so if any of you were there, please tell me who they were, if you can.
Of course, that Fuller bunch is still on the road! I refer to my cherished, lifelong friend, GERALD A. FULLER, 1960, and his WC-honorary spouse, Rebecca A. Fuller. Becky is so good in keeping me posted on the Fuller clan. I appreciate that so much, Becky. They returned to their Kentucky place for the summer months, attending the Kentucky Derby, as usual.
Currently, they're in Seattle for the annual reunion of Jerry's old Army football team. They will return by July 2, and I'm sure Becky will give us a new travel report. However, I'm sure they'll soon be off to somewhere else! Becky also reported a brother-in-law, 1959's ROBT. H. FULLER, had a knee surgery pretty recently and apparently, the recovery is going well.
Jerry and Becky also visited friends in Savannah during the Christmas season and were able to drop in on Jerry's son, Shane, and his family. They live in Sumter. S.C. They let no grass grow under their feet and, on this current trip to the Pacific Northwest, they'll also visit Becky's best pal from high school, and may go into Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
, to enjoy some of that incredible countryside and of course, the fresh salmon.
It seems the eldest brother, BILL FULLER (what class year is it, Becky?) has left Kentucky and now moved to Punta Gorda, Florida. She said they love it, so I'm glad for them. I hope they've got lots of dough, though, if they're just moving down there. Florida's cost of living is now among the highest in the U.S., and believe me, I know from experience. But if it was costly where they already lived, perhaps they won't notice it as much. I think it's important to love where you live. I sure do, and have no regrets.
My recent conversations with WC people have included EULA FAYE BAILEY (as always), BRUCE E. CHENOWETH (as always
), CHAS. A. HIGH, JR. (as always), and I'm thinking it was also during this bulletin period when I had a lengthy chat with my primary field reporter, GARY E. BARNES. I think there was also one with JOANN K. STEMLEY. In any case, keep those lines of communication open with these old school pals. We are far too rapidly losing far too many of us. Make those calls, send that card, make that visit, send that e-mail, look for that person until you find them. Once it's too late, it's too late, forever.
All right, gang, we're finished with another installment of our WeCaTon News Report. It's now June 27, so has been just 37 days since our last bulletin. I'm trying never to go more than 8 weeks, so I'm meeting my self-imposed goal. If you have
enjoyed reading it, then my mission has been accomplished. If you've found an old pal as you read it, then I'm elated! I leave each of you with my usual wish for glowing health, personal safety, great happiness, peaceful serenity, spiritual harmony, and boundless prosperity. Ciao!
